Professional Accreditation

Gestalt Therapy Brisbane's 4-year training program has been fully accredited by GANZ (Gestalt Australia and New Zealand), a professional association of Gestalt practitioners. This accreditation is valid until 31 March 2014. GANZ is the peak body representing Gestalt practitioners in Australia and New Zealand.

Gestalt Therapy Brisbane's 4 year training programme is also accredited by PACFA. This accreditation is valid until 31 March 2014.

All graduates of the 4-year program are eligible for professional membership with GANZ. a

GANZ is a fully accredited member of PACFA (Psychotherapists and Counsellors' Federation of Australia), a national peak body.

Graduates of the 4-year GTB programme can apply to be on the PACFA Register of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for the Australian community after an additional period of practical experience and supervision.

Graduates of Gestalt Therapy Brisbane's 4-year training will receive a Certificate of Advanced Clinical Gestalt Therapy. Students who are eligible have the option of enrolling into an accredited higher education programme where, upon successful completion, will receive a Master of Gestalt Therapy.

Higher Education Accreditation 

Gestalt Therapy Brisbane offers a Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy  (1 year of study) Master of Gestalt Therapy (a further 3 years of study) accredited through the Office or Higher Education, Queensland Education. Accreditation for the Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy and Master of Gestalt Therapy are valid until December 2013.

The broad aim of the Graduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy is firstly, to introduce students to the principles and practice of Gestalt and its application to counselling, psychotherapy, group and organisational work and secondly, to provide a theoretical base from which students can pursue further Gestalt therapy studies.

The objectives of the Graduate Certificate programme are:

  • To introduce students to the basic theory and practice of Gestalt therapy;
  • To build the capacity  within people to utilise Gestalt theory and methods within a non therapeutic helping relationship;
  • To build resilience in people by enhancing their commitment to self appreciation and self nurturing;
  • To provide an experience of working within a group setting with the principles and practice of Gestalt therapy;
  • To enhance the skills of people working as counsellors and therapists;
  • To develop the awareness in people of their own particular style in working in Counselling;
  • To provide an opportunity for people to explore practice and ethical issues for people working as counsellors and therapists;
  • To build within people the ability to apply Gestalt theory and methods to a range of occupational areas that require people skills;
  • To enhance the efficiency and creativity of people in their life and work situations through utilising key Gestalt principles;
  • To provide a professional development opportunity that will enhance the skills of people working within the human service industry; and,
  • To prepare students for Master level study in Gestalt Therapy.

The Master of Gestalt Therapy aims to broaden the skills of individuals who have already gained an undergraduate degree, to provide them with specialisation within a systematic and coherent body of knowledge, namely Gestalt theory and practice and or to develop vocational knowledge and skills in a new professional area.  

The Masters degree provides an opportunity for holders of undergraduate degrees in related disciplines to acquire an advanced coherent body of theoretical and applied knowledge, and to develop specialist skills within the field of professional counselling and psychotherapy that are not generally delivered in undergraduate programmes. 

The objectives of the Master of Gestalt Therapy are:

  • To develop qualified Gestalt Therapist with an ability to work with individuals, groups, couples, families and in organisational settings;
  • To enhance peoples’ capacity to work as ethical professionals; in psychotherapy, and counselling in the private or publish sectors;  or in health, social welfare, education or corporate arenas;
  • To develop people’s ability to respond to clients’ need in an ethical, creative and relational way;
  • To build competency in people in the practice of the methodology of Gestalt therapy;
  • To build competency in people to manage their practice of counselling and psychotherapy;
  • To have a clear understanding of the social, cultural and developmental field in which counselling and psychotherapy occurs;
  • To be able to demonstrate a range of skills in relations to assessment, intervention, evaluation, consultation and referral;
  • To understand the contribution of research to the development of the counselling profession;
  • To develop the higher order skills of people in a way that provides them with the analytical skills and practical wisdom to meet the challenges of working as professionals in the twenty-first century;
  • To provide people with a dynamic learning experience that honours adult, relational and experiential learning principles and enhances the ability of people to be more effective in their life;
  • To support the development of people and their ability to draw on their own unique life experiences and world view in order that they be independent thinkers and original practitioners.

Statement of occupational outcomes

The attainment of the Master of Gestalt Therapy offers a range of occupational outcomes for graduates.

  • It provides the qualification and the backing of a professional association for people desiring to work as Gestalt Therapists in private practice. 
  • It gives people the necessary qualifications to take up positions as Counsellors and Psychotherapists in community and public agencies.
  • It builds professional Gestalt practitioners who are able to take up positions in the fields of nursing, mental health, social welfare, counselling, teaching, and business and organisation development.  
  • It enhances the professional practice of people who already have an occupation in that they are able to incorporate Gestalt theory, methods and application to a wide arena of work.

 

The Office of Higher Education

The Queensland Office of Higher Education is an element of the State Department of Education. One of its duties, on behalf of the Minister for Education, is to oversee accreditation arrangements relating to the private providers of higher education awards.  There are a number of course in Queensland that are offered by private providers and Gestalt Therapy Brisbane's Master of Gestalt Therapy is one such course. The oversight of the Office of Higher Education helps ensure that Queensland's higher education is of the highest quality, comparable in standard to anywhere in the world and its graduates are competitive internationally.
